Título: Neutrino Window to Our matter-only Universe

Resumo: The evidence that the observable Universe is composed of only matter and not antimatter is well established from cosmological observations. Although the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics contains the ingredients to generate such an asymmetry, it turns out to be insufficient and new physics is called for. On the other hand, neutrinos being the only electrically charge neutral fundamental fermions that we know of can acquire Majorana mass which violate lepton number by two units. In the SM, however, such a mass is only allowed provided there is new physics which violates lepton number at some (possibly high) scale that has not been explored experimentally. The discovery of small and nonzero neutrino mass in 1998 hints at such a new scale and in particular, the small mass can be elegantly explained through the seesaw mechanism if this new scale is high. Within this picture, a mechanism to generate a matter-antimatter asymmetric Universe through lepton number violation at high scale (leptogenesis) can be naturally realized. This picture is also supported by the possibility of Grand Unified Theories where the three coupling constants in the SM are unified at high scale. Though a direct test is challenging due to the high scale, circumstantial evidence and precision test can help to pin down the various possibilities of leptogenesis.
