Título: Modular invariance and the flavor puzzle

    Resumo:
The flavor sector of particle physics requires more than twenty parameters for a complete description. Despite the remarkable precision of current experimental data, the origin of these parameters remains obscure. This so-called flavor puzzle represents one of the most profound and intriguing challenges in our understanding of fundamental interactions. The quest to derive these parameters from underlying principles has motivated extensive exploration of various symmetry structures. In this talk, I will discuss how modular invariance — ubiquitous in both string theory and condensed matter systems — can serve as a flavor symmetry. Modular invariance can be studied within a consistent bottom-up framework, which I will review and apply to the study of neutrino masses and mixing angles. Despite the inherent freedom in model building, it is possible to formulate a set of universal and unambiguous predictions when the theory approaches a critical point, analogous to the behavior observed in phase transitions. Furthermore, modular invariance offers new insight into one of the long-standing mysteries of the quark sector: the strong CP problem.
