ABSTRACT: Simulation based methods for design of mechatronic system are quickly becoming the norm. However, there are additional concepts that are very useful in the design process. Simulation based design optimization is one area that can increase the value of simulation enormously, but also put special requirements on the simulation and optimization methods. In addition, design analytics, to represent complex relations in a design will also be discussed. For traversing design space efficiently, the parametrization is critical. Here also methods for analytical parametrization are presented. Finally, Design information entropy is a useful concept that can be applied to various stages of design to describe design complexity. Furthermore, some industrial applications ranging from aircraft to construction equipment will be discussed.
Short CV: Petter Krus is a full professor and head of the Division of fluid and Mechatronic Systems at Linköping University, where he also got his PhD. From 2001-2010 he had the position of Professor and head of the Division of Machine Design at Linköping University, where research was in the area of product modelling and design automation. In 2010 he moved to Division of Fluid and Mechatronic Systems, which is the largest academic lab in hydraulics in Sweden. The lab also engages in Aeronautics research, e.g. aircraft system design and subscale flight testing. Another important area of the lab has been the continuous development of the open-source system simulation software HOPSAN. The research is mostly in collaboration with industry, e.g. Volvo, Epiroc, SKF and Saab. Petter Krus has since 2010 nurtured research collaboration with several universities in Brazil. In 2015 he became “Swedish Professor of Aeronautics – Endowed Chair in Memory of Peter Wallenberg Sr” at Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica, ITA. This part time professorship is promoting Swedish-Brazilian research collaboration in the Aeronautics and also in other areas.
